Finance and Business - Energy and Sustainability roles

Current roles

The Energy and Sustainability Team sits within the Estates and Facilities Management division and is responsible for the National Highways' progress towards our Corporate Carbon KPI and key aspect of the Net Zero Plan, reporting for the Greening Government Commitments and leads the campaign for sustainable behaviour change.

The team was formed in 2019 but its role within National Highways has evolved to being a leader across the organisation in the environmental space and has achieved a lot in a short space of time. Examples of achievements include: significant carbon savings through greening the estate, roll out of comprehensive EV charging infrastructure, establishing and managing the Green Network (our ever-expanding sustainability engagement channels) and the Super Greens (our sustainability champions); all whilst ensuring energy security through efficient payment and procurement of utilities.

"I started at National Highways back in February 2021 and have enjoyed the challenge ever since. With such a wide portfolio of work, the Energy & Sustainability Team has given me the opportunity to be a stakeholder within huge carbon reduction projects across the road network, work through staff behaviour change initiatives and has provided ample opportunity for personal and professional development and progression. If you had asked me three years ago whether I would have enjoyed and developed my career as much as I have, I wouldn’t believe you!"
Bobby Mchale – Energy Sustainability Manager
"I joined the Energy & Sustainability team in October 2022 and in my short time so far in the team, I have had the opportunity to be involved in a huge variety of different projects and initiatives, connecting with and collaborating with colleagues all over the organisation. Working in a close-knit, supportive team has given me the chance to bring my ideas to address our sustainability challenges and to try new things. There have also been lots of opportunities for professional and personal development which has meant I’ve been able to achieve a lot more than I thought I would in the amount of time I’ve been in role."
